Ingredients:
- 2 slices of bread (white, whole wheat, or your preferred choice)
- 2-3 ounces of cheese (cheddar, American, Swiss, or a combination)
- 1-2 tablespoons of butter, softened
- Optional additions: sliced tomato, crispy bacon, caramelized onions, or avocado
Instructions:
- Preheat a skillet or griddle over medium heat.
- Take the two slices of bread and spread butter on one side of each slice. Make sure to cover the entire surface.
- Place one slice of bread, buttered side down, on the preheated skillet or griddle.
- Layer the cheese evenly on top of the bread slice in the skillet. If you’re adding any optional ingredients, now is the time to add them on top of the cheese.
- Place the second slice of bread, buttered side up, on top of the cheese and other ingredients.
- Cook the sandwich for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until the bread turns golden brown and crispy, and the cheese starts to melt. To achieve a perfectly melted cheese, you can cover the skillet with a lid for a minute or so.
- Once the sandwich is grilled to your desired level of crispiness and melty goodness, remove it from the skillet.
- Let the sandwich cool for a minute or two to allow the cheese to set slightly. This will prevent it from oozing out when you cut it.
- Cut the grilled cheese sandwich diagonally or into halves, and serve it hot.
Enjoy your delicious homemade grilled cheese sandwich! It pairs well with a bowl of tomato soup or your favorite side dish.
